I have always had a strong fascination for enchanting stories and magical explanations of the world. Often I have wondered if the reality which we experience in our daily lives – rational, strict, and dull as it can be -  is the exclusive reality. Since my childhood I was mesmerised by the stories of the Bible, Greek mythology and fairy tales, both by the redemptive, warm and loving traits, which are inherent to these stories, but also by the cruelty, which more often than not accompanies the good or was even caused by it. This dichotomy often plays a major role in my paintings because even though the setting might seem serene or almost kitschy, there is always an eerie element in them – a taste of bitterness and tragedy in an idyllic world. Throughout the years I have continued to experiment with what it could mean if there were other “layers” of reality beyond the one reality that we see. Thus, paintings have come into existence, which next to symbols, picture rooms with vertiginous perspectives, behind which walls other rooms or layers may billow and even break through the walls; figures may reach through different layers, gravity may be suspended, life and death might meet, and strange rituals may take place. By combining conventional symbols and stories with our present day, often times insta-like and superficial, world, a new kind of magical explanation for our world is created.
